Do This Before You Cement Your New Year's Resolutions I’ve just sat down at my desk thinking about how to start the first newsletter in 2026. The holidays gave me space to deepen the information shared at the Ren Xue Life Cultivation retreat in November in Dunedin, New Zealand. What’s actually important that I want to be doing? 🤔🤔 So let me share these three questions asked during the retreat: >> How do I figure out what I want? >> How do I reach certainty about what I want? >> What steps do I need to take to figure out what I want? Answers to these questions can come in many forms, from the metaphysical to the banal, performed with lots of struggle and confusion, even (?); something could be like "I want world peace" to "I want candy". Should I therefore become a politician or work in a Candy Crush factory? Just curious what answers come to you. So how can we be certain of what we want? And how can we reach this point of certainty? Or simply: This question can be asked in all kinds of contexts, and it’s a very common question. But of course, you’re here, reading this very first newsletter in 2026. That means we are looking at it from the perspective of what we want for life, right? In terms of the meaning, to truly realize the purpose, the value of life. Plus, this question is not just any question. It's not just something we want to know in any other setting in life. This question is a very, very serious and important question to ask. Everyone should ask themselves this question. So have you actually put thoughts into it or effort into searching for an answer? If you have never had the chance to look into it and to truly find clarity in this question, how would your life be? Maybe living day by day, waking up, doing all kinds of things, going back to bed, waking up again, doing all kinds of things, going back to bed, waking up again… All that time flying by… …Thinking, I’ve been wanting to change for a while now… Inspired to do better in 2026, really taking care of myself, like I’m gonna be my best bud ever! Which is a really awesome energy to be starting a new year with! Don’t get me wrong. So from the very beginning of a lifetime, the main feature of life activity is wanting—constantly wanting more. As life grows, especially when self-consciousness develops in a more mature way, when we can exercise agency better, that becomes an even stronger feature. We keep wanting, and we keep finding things to want to obtain. We want more; we want better. There seems to be a container without a bottom that can never be filled. It's an endless process being that way. The real problem? 🤔 The direction we take to get what we want. It's almost always from the external. What’s driving this endless desire to want more? There's a lot of desire there, to satisfy certain needs. We want to obtain that sense of satisfaction. This can drive us to lead a very busy life. Everyone is living a busy life, doing lots of things, and getting what they want. Over to a few more questions: What are we trying to achieve through doing that? We want life to become better and more valuable and more meaningful, too. But does it work that way—the way we do it? Does that really make life better and more valuable? What is the definition of a better life? How do we know we have made life better? In Life Cultivation, we would say there are things that we need to look at to make that judgment. For example, health, real health, health on all levels of life. Especially health on the Jinghshen level (the unity of consciousness, spiritual heart, and Shen), and of course true happiness and a true sense of well-being. These are the signs of a good life from the perspective of Ren Xue Life Cultivation. We are talking about this ultimate want– Just so we do not mix them up with our everyday wants. Knowing the importance of everything we do. There are things we need to do in everyday life. We just need to know the different levels of importance and spare our attention in a wise way. Of course, very often we have very good intentions. We want world peace, for instance. But how do we make it happen? This is a wish, right? 🧾 Of course, we want to make it come true. How? Becoming a politician? Can we actually achieve world peace by becoming a politician? There are many politicians throughout human history who did want to or brought peace to the world for a short while. But it hasn’t been easy, even when they really wanted to do that. Just think about whether they can actually help deal with all the problems of ignorance in humanity. The patterns we have on our consciousness level, on our heart level. Ignorance. The lack of understanding of the laws of life and reality—that’s the root cause of lack of peace. So unless the politicians have actually cultivated their lifes and made progress in working on clearing ignorance, ignorance will continue to be there and will continue to have its effects. In the Confucian classic "Li Ji (Book of Rites) – Da Xue (Great Learning)" you’ll find this: "In ancient times, those who wished to show the right way to the world first governed their states; wishing to govern their states, they first harmonized their families; wishing to harmonize their families, they first cultivated themselves; wishing to cultivate themselves, they first put their hearts in the right place; wishing to put their hearts in the right place, they first made their intentions sincere; wishing to make their intentions sincere, they first acquired knowledge; acquiring knowledge lies in investigation." This exposition reflects the Confucian practical path of "from internal sagehood to external kingship," emphasizing the unity of personal cultivation and social responsibility. Although this wonderful aspiration and ideal have been around for more than 2000 years, due mainly to the lack of effective methods and approaches, it remains merely a wish.🧾 Where is the right development path for you? 👣 As long as humanity is to continue to exist and develop, moving towards clarity and gaining more understanding of the laws of life is an inevitable path of development. Just to see what happens. Wisdom is the key to the true transformation of ignorance. Over to you: I’d love to hear two things—
